She began researching her life and discovered many incredible factual details in Cordelia s well-kept journals including the fascinating audiences with Lincoln. Since she was working for a newspaper in Wisconsin, she decided to do a story on Cordelia. The author, Jane Walrath Solem, became intrigued with the story of this amazing woman. Military.Īfter the war was over and the hospitals emptied, she brought three hundred orphans of the Civil War to Madison to start one of the first orphanages in the U.S. Cordelia Harvey was awarded the rank of Colonel by the U.S. This contributed to the growing need for veteran's hospitals. One in Madison, Prairie du Chien and Milwaukee. She was instrumental in getting three veterans hospitals built in Wisconsin. She met with Lincoln five times and finally convinced him that he must build hospitals for the wounded and dying troops. She eventually took a petition to Abraham Lincoln from the parents of the Wisconsin Troops to plead with him to build hospitals in Wisconsin.
She clearly saw the need to build hospitals for the troops in their home states so they could be sent back there to heal and recover. Also, she wrote letters home for them, held them as they died and worked tirelessly along with doctors to help save lives. She nursed, cooked, mothered, and prayed with the young troops. During this process she saw the tremendous needs of the troops in her midst and resolutely expanded her responsibilities. This gave her the authority to visit all the military hospitals in the South and to deliver much-needed medical supplies to them. To resolve her grief Cordelia followed in his footsteps becoming the first woman Sanitary Agent in the U.S. After only two months in office, he drowned while trying to deliver medical supplies to the troops. She was married to the seventh governor of the State of Wisconsin, Louis Harvey, who began his term in office at the beginning of the Civil War in January 1862. The Civil War Troops named her their Wisconsin Angel. She was a woman of great determination and courage, who, for a noble cause, challenged one of the giants of history, Abraham Lincoln.
